PSA: the earth needs a hug

I hope everyone had a wonderful Earth Day! If you’re still here, it sounds like it went pretty well! A thought occurred to me the other day, and at first I dismissed it as a stoner thought, but after more contemplation I realized there’s something to it. The earth needs a hug!

That’s it, I realized the earth needs a hug right now. There’s a lot going on, and it could use a little love. So the other day I got down on my floor and just hugged the ground… and it felt SO good.

Obviously you’ll want to do this somewhere sanitary, so as awesome as it would feel to do on the bare earth outside, it might be realistic to practice this indoors for now. If you think about it, even if you’re hugging the earth by hugging your bed, your bed is in your home which is on the earth. If you zoom out on the earth, there you are, hugging something attached to its surface.

I noticed when I did this that it felt incredibly comforting. Lying facedown is a posture that can make you feel more “grounded;” the magical theory behind this is that your excess energy is flowing downward into the earth where it is neutralized. Numerous studies have been done on the benefits of “grounding” by putting one’s bare feet on the surface of the earth; this practice is similar in that it reconnects you with remembering you are on a planet. Hugging (even an inanimate object like the floor!) also releases oxytocin in the body, which can make you feel happier and more relaxed.

Look, I’m not going to try to convince you that we can magically cure all the problems in our world by hugging it, but this is something you can do while staying at home, which is doing your part to save the world. And I think we could all use a little more love in our atmosphere. So I’ll be sending you hugs from the planet’s floor!
